No Assays and 20.5 Million Cancelled Options: What Hercules Metals Reported Before Tuesday's Open
The Idaho copper explorer's first hole into its Hook target found alteration and pyrite, and the company itself said not to expect significant copper from the assays.
Hercules Metals Corp., listed on the TSX Venture Exchange as BIG, reported on September 14, 2026 that its first reconnaissance hole at the Hook target in Idaho hit strong alteration and pyrite. Assays are pending, and the company said they should be more useful for pointing at the system than for returning copper. The same release cancelled 20.5 million stock options granted six weeks earlier, without giving a reason.

Hercules Metals told the market on September 14, 2026 that the assays from its newest drill hole are probably not going to show much copper. The company put it in its own release, before anyone else could.
That is an unusually honest sentence to find in a junior explorer's news, and it deserves to be read carefully rather than skipped. The same release also cancelled 20.5 million stock options that had been granted six weeks earlier, and gave no reason at all.
What the hole at Hook found, and what it did not
Hercules Metals Corp. is a Canadian company listed on the TSX Venture Exchange under the symbol BIG. Its main asset, the Hercules copper project, is in Washington County, Idaho, in the United States, northwest of the town of Cambridge. The Canadian listing and the American rock are two separate facts and it is easy to blur them.
Hook is a new target about three kilometres east of Leviathan, the copper system the company has been drilling since 2023. Hercules described Hook as an induced polarisation chargeability anomaly roughly 1.8 kilometres long, with a stronger core of about 500 metres reading 20 to 40 millivolts per volt, modelled to start within about 100 metres of surface.
Induced polarisation is a survey that measures how well rock holds a brief electrical charge. Sulphide minerals hold it well, which is why explorers use the method to find them. The catch is the one that matters here: pyrite, which is iron sulphide and worth nothing, holds a charge just as well as the copper sulphides that are worth a great deal. A chargeability anomaly tells you there is sulphide underground. It does not tell you which sulphide.
The first hole, HER-26-03, was collared from an existing road about 400 metres west of the anomaly, which Hercules said let it test the target without waiting for new access permits. The hole logged intense quartz-sericite-pyrite alteration and skarn alteration over three depth intervals: 500 to 545 metres, 597 to 614 metres, and 683 to 707 metres. Pyrite runs 5 to 10 per cent as disseminations and veins.
Alteration is the chemical fingerprint a hot mineralising fluid leaves in the rock it passes through. Finding it means a system was working there. It does not mean the system left metal behind in that spot.
And this is where Hercules said the quiet part itself. Assays are pending, and the release states that because the intercept is distal within the interpreted pyrite halo, the results "are expected to be more useful for providing additional vectoring information toward the system than for returning significant copper-molybdenum intercepts". Distal means far out from the centre. Vectoring means pointing the next hole in a better direction.
So the honest summary of Monday's geology is this. Hercules drilled the edge of a target on purpose, from a road, to see which way to go next. It found evidence a system exists. It has not yet found the metal, it expects this hole will not show much, and it said the follow-up drilling is targeted to begin in 2027, not this year.
Twenty and a half million options, cancelled without an explanation
The corporate half of the release is easy to miss and harder to dismiss.
| Grant | Date granted | Exercise price | Options cancelled |
|---|---|---|---|
| Incoming management team | July 30, 2026 | C$0.59 | 18,650,000 |
| Second grant | August 7, 2026 | C$0.88 | 1,850,000 of 2,350,000 |
| Total cancelled | 20,500,000 |
After the cancellation, 5,290,000 options and 2,666,000 restricted share units remain outstanding, with 6,985,745 available for future issuance. Set against roughly 350.2 million shares outstanding, the cancelled options were about 5.9 per cent of the company on my arithmetic from the disclosed figures.
They were also deeply in the money. Options struck at C$0.59 and C$0.88 against a share price that reached C$1.48 on Friday represented real value, and it was handed back six weeks after being granted. The release does not say who decided this or why. No exchange bulletin explaining it had been published as of Monday's close, and retail speculation about a regulator forcing the change has no document behind it, so it stays speculation.
What the company did disclose is that the same people paid cash for shares. Seven members of the incoming team subscribed for 7,258,066 shares at C$0.62, for C$4,500,000.92, in a non-brokered placement that closed August 31, 2026. No warrants, no finder's fees, a four-month hold. Buying stock at C$0.62 and losing options struck at C$0.59 are different transactions pointing in different directions, and only one of them has been explained.
The people running it, and one page that has not caught up
The management change is recent and complete. Effective September 1, 2026, Hercules installed the former Arizona Sonoran Copper Company team, led by George Ogilvie as President and Chief Executive Officer. Nicholas Nikolakakis became Senior Vice-President, Finance and Chief Financial Officer. Chris Paul, who founded the company and was chief executive, moved to Senior Vice-President, Exploration and stayed on the board. Keith Li left the chief financial officer role effective September 1, 2026.
One small thing worth correcting for anyone checking names. The company's own corporate page, read on September 14, 2026, still listed Keith Li as chief financial officer and corporate secretary. The July 30, 2026 release is the current document; the website is behind it.
There is still no resource estimate
Hercules has drilled long intervals at Leviathan. In June 2026 it reported hole HER-25-18 at 787.91 metres of 0.54 per cent copper equivalent and HER-25-21 at 801.62 metres of 0.40 per cent copper equivalent. Those are very long intervals and they are worth respecting.
Three limits belong beside them. First, the company states that insufficient data exist to report true thickness, so every one of those metres is core length down the hole, not the real width of the mineralised body. Second, copper equivalent is a single number that rolls molybdenum, silver and gold into copper using assumed prices, and Hercules's formula assumes a flat 80 per cent metallurgical recovery across all metals, with no metallurgical testwork cited to support it. Third, and most important, none of this has been converted into a mineral resource estimate.
A mineral resource estimate under National Instrument 43-101 is the first regulated statement of how much metal is actually there, signed by an independent qualified person. Hercules does not have one. Its August 2026 financing release lists "geological and resource modelling" among the uses of proceeds, which is the work that comes before an estimate, not the estimate itself. The qualified person named on the Hook release is Dillon Hume, P.Geo., the company's Vice-President, Exploration.
The money and the company it keeps
The last financial statements Hercules has posted cover the quarter ended March 31, 2026 and are dated May 28, 2026. They show C$8.09 million in cash and C$7.36 million of working capital. Since then the company raised C$31.48 million gross on May 20, 2026 at C$0.59 a share through a bought deal and concurrent placement, with BMO Capital Markets and SCP Resource Finance as joint bookrunners taking a 6 per cent cash fee, and C$4.5 million more on August 31, 2026. No statements for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 were posted on the company's filings page when it was read on September 14, 2026; market data services show cash of about C$33.2 million from the most recent financials, a secondary figure rather than a filed one.
Two relationships should be named. Barrick invested C$23.39 million in November 2023 and held 12.82 per cent as at July 28, 2025, when it also optioned the surrounding Olympus Claims to Hercules for C$8 million payable in stages. Barrick's current holding is not disclosed anywhere I could find; after roughly 60.6 million new shares were issued this year, it would sit nearer 9.6 per cent if it did not top up, which is my arithmetic and not a company figure. Separately, SCP Resource Finance published research on Hercules in March 2026 and was a bookrunner on the May financing about six weeks later, which is a conflict any investor reading that report should weigh.
The close, and what it prices in
The shares closed at C$1.46 on the TSX Venture Exchange on September 14, 2026, down two cents or 1.4 per cent, having traded as low as C$1.29 during the morning. Volume was 7.98 million shares against a 30-day average near 2 million, roughly four times normal, and market value was about C$511 million on QuoteMedia data read after the close. The stock has run from C$0.59 in May to C$1.48 on Friday.
That is a company priced at half a billion dollars on a target it has not yet defined, a second target it has just begun to test, and a management team six weeks into the job. The geology is promising and the honesty in Monday's release is a good sign about how this team will report. Neither of those is a deposit.
An explorer that warns you off its own pending assays has told you something useful. The 20.5 million options it cancelled in the same release told you nothing at all, and that is the odder half of the day.
