Canadian oil and energy stocks

Live delayed prices for Canadian oil producers, pipelines and integrated energy companies on the TSX, with how heavy oil differentials, egress and payout policy drive the sector.

Energy is one of the two sectors that define the Toronto Stock Exchange. Most Canadian production comes from the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin, and a large share of it is heavy oil and oil sands bitumen — a barrel that prices at a discount to the West Texas Intermediate benchmark rather than at it.

That discount, the Western Canadian Select differential, is the single number that separates Canadian producers from their American peers. It widens when pipeline and rail egress is tight and narrows when new capacity opens, and it flows almost directly into cash flow because operating costs are largely fixed.

The screen below separates the three business models investors often blend together: integrated producers that also refine, pure-play upstream producers whose earnings track the oil and gas strip, and midstream companies whose revenue comes from contracted tolls rather than the commodity price.

Häufige Fragen

What are the largest Canadian oil stocks?
By market value the sector is led by the pipeline and midstream companies Enbridge and TC Energy, and by the integrated and oil sands producers Canadian Natural Resources, Suncor Energy, Cenovus Energy and Imperial Oil, all listed on the TSX.
Why do Canadian oil stocks not track the WTI oil price exactly?
Most Canadian barrels sell as Western Canadian Select, a heavier and more sour blend that trades at a differential to WTI. Pipeline capacity, refinery demand and the Canadian dollar all move that differential, so realised prices can diverge from the headline benchmark.
Are pipeline companies oil stocks?
Only indirectly. Midstream companies such as Enbridge, TC Energy and Pembina earn most of their revenue from long-term contracted tolls on volumes shipped, so they behave more like regulated infrastructure than like producers.
Do Canadian energy companies pay dividends?
Most of the large producers and all of the major midstream companies do, and several also return capital through share buybacks tied to a net-debt target. Junior and exploration-stage energy issuers generally do not.
