Strictly necessary
Session and authentication tokens, CSRF protection, rate-limit and bot-mitigation signals, your language and locale choice, theme preference, consent state, and short-lived caches that make pages load. These cannot be switched off without breaking the site, and we rely on legitimate interests and contractual necessity rather than consent for them.
Functional and preference
Watchlist and layout preferences, dismissed banners, chart range and interval choices, table sort order, and whether you have seen a one-time explainer. Refusing these does not break the site; it just makes it forget you.
Analytics
Aggregate measurement of page views, article performance, referral sources, error rates and feature usage. We use this to decide what to build and what to cover, not to profile you individually.
Advertising and third parties
Where advertising, sponsored units or affiliate links are served, the advertiser, ad platform, or measurement vendor may set its own identifiers and may combine them with data it holds independently of us. Those parties are independent controllers, we do not control their practices, and their own policies govern that data. We do not sell personal information for money.
Your choices
On your first visit a consent bar offers two choices. "Accept necessary" keeps only the cookies the site needs to work — sign-in, security, your language and the consent record itself — and no analytics are loaded. "Accept all" adds analytics cookies so we can measure which pages and features readers use.
Your choice is stored for twelve months and can be changed at any time: select "Cookie settings" in the footer to clear it and reopen the bar.
Your controls
Where applicable law requires it, non-essential cookies are set only after you consent, and you can change or withdraw that choice at any time from the cookie controls in the footer. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser, use private browsing, or send a Global Privacy Control signal, which we honour where law requires. Blocking strictly necessary cookies will log you out and may break sign-in, alerts and saved content.
Retention
Session cookies expire when you close the browser. Authentication cookies persist for the length of your session policy unless you sign out. Preference and consent records persist up to twelve months unless you clear them. Third-party lifetimes are set by those third parties.
