Commodities, explained
- Why do commodity prices matter to Canadian investors?
- Energy and materials make up a large share of the S&P/TSX Composite, so commodity prices move a meaningful part of the Canadian market — and the Canadian dollar with it.
- What is the difference between spot and futures prices?
- A spot price is what the physical commodity trades for today. A futures price is an agreement to buy or sell at a set date later, so it also reflects storage, financing and expectations.
- Why is Canadian crude priced below WTI?
- Western Canadian Select is heavier and further from refineries, so it trades at a discount to West Texas Intermediate. That differential widens when pipeline capacity is tight.
