First Quantum Stock: Building a Scenario Model for Cobre Panamá
A copper producer dominated by one unresolved asset
First Quantum trades on the TSX as FM. Its main active mines are Kansanshi and Sentinel in Zambia and Guelb Moghrein in Mauritania. Cobre Panamá has been under preservation and safe-management arrangements since late 2023, although processing of stockpiled ore was authorized in 2026. Q2 2026 revenue was US$1.52 billion and EBITDA was US$400 million; net debt was approximately US$5.41 billion.

First Quantum Minerals provides substantial exposure to copper through Kansanshi and Sentinel in Zambia, together with Guelb Moghrein in Mauritania. It also owns development assets including Taca Taca in Argentina, La Granja and Haquira in Peru, and the Enterprise nickel operation in Zambia.
Yet the investment case remains dominated by Cobre Panamá. The large mine was halted in 2023 following a constitutional and political dispute over its operating arrangements. In 2026, authorities permitted processing of stockpiled ore, allowing limited activity and inventory monetization. That step improves near-term cash generation and site management, but it is not equivalent to a durable agreement for full mine operations.
Financial picture
First Quantum reported second-quarter revenue of US$1.52 billion, gross profit of US$297 million and EBITDA of US$400 million. Results included a negative EBITDA contribution from Cobre Panamá and losses realized under copper-hedging arrangements. Net debt remained high at approximately US$5.41 billion.
Bull case
The strongest upside scenario combines reliable Zambian production, higher copper prices, lower unit costs and a negotiated route toward a broader Cobre Panamá restart. Processing the stockpiles could provide cash and demonstrate operational readiness. Long-term development projects add additional optionality.
Bear case
High leverage reduces flexibility. Cobre Panamá could remain restricted, face further litigation or require materially different fiscal and environmental terms. Zambia creates concentration in one national tax, power and currency environment. Other risks include grade variability, smelter constraints, power availability, tailings, water management and the capital required for brownfield and new-project development.
TMX displayed an average target of about C$48.87 from 12 analysts, but the range of outcomes depends more than usual on political and legal assumptions.
ESG considerations
Cobre Panamá has generated intense debate about legal certainty, biodiversity, employment, tax revenue and the rights of local communities. Any article should avoid treating the dispute solely as a financial catalyst. Environmental compliance audits, closure security, consultation and public legitimacy are central to the asset’s future.
Bottom line
First Quantum offers strong operational leverage to copper, but also unusually concentrated political and balance-sheet risk. The stock is best analyzed through explicit scenarios for Panama rather than a single-point valuation.
