Canadian ETFs: Building a Core Portfolio with One List
Five funds can cover Canada, the world, and your bond sleeve.

One list is not a gimmick
A core portfolio does not need dozens of funds. A handful of broad, low-cost ETFs can cover Canadian equities, developed and emerging markets, and a bond sleeve. The goal is diversification, not complexity.
Canadian equity
Use one of:
- XIC.TO (iShares Core S&P/TSX Capped Composite): Broad Canada, capped weights, tiny MER.
- VCN.TO (Vanguard FTSE Canada All Cap): Slightly broader small-cap exposure.
- XIU.TO (iShares S&P/TSX 60): Large-cap focus, the original TSX ETF.
- ZCN.TO (BMO S&P/TSX Capped Composite): BMO''s low-cost clone of the broad TSX.
Any of these four works as a single Canada fund. The differences are small enough that costs and trading volume matter more than brand.
International equity
Most Canadian investors are already over-exposed to the domestic market. Split the rest of the equity allocation between:
- Developed markets outside North America: XEF.TO or VIU.TO.
- Emerging markets: XEC.TO or VEE.TO.
- U.S. total market: XUU.TO or VUN.TO.
These three funds cover the world and strip out the home-country bias that plagues many Canadian portfolios.
Bonds and alternatives
A simple bond ETF like ZAG.TO or VAB.TO provides Canadian aggregate bonds. For inflation protection, add a real-return bond or short-term corporate fund if you want less interest-rate sensitivity. For most investors, a single aggregate bond ETF is enough to start.
Putting it together
A classic 60/40 split might look like:
- 20% Canadian equity (XIC.TO or ZCN.TO)
- 25% U.S. equity (XUU.TO)
- 10% developed international (XEF.TO)
- 5% emerging markets (XEC.TO)
- 40% aggregate bonds (ZAG.TO)
Rebalance once or twice a year. Keep costs low. Do not chase last year''s winner.
The real advantage
The edge is not the specific fund. It is the discipline of staying diversified, keeping fees low, and rebalancing when emotions say otherwise.
