Lithium Americas and Thacker Pass: Construction Risk Explained
A strategic project with major institutional backing
Lithium Americas trades as LAC on the TSX and NYSE. Its principal asset is a 62% interest in the Thacker Pass lithium project in Nevada; General Motors owns the remaining 38%. Phase 1 is designed for approximately 40,000 tonnes per year of battery-quality lithium carbonate, with mechanical completion targeted for late 2027. Q1 2026 cash and restricted cash totalled US$1.21 billion and long-term liabilities were approximately US$1.07 billion.

Lithium Americas is building Thacker Pass in northern Nevada, one of the largest proposed U.S. lithium developments. The company owns 62% of the project and General Motors owns 38%. Phase 1 is designed to produce approximately 40,000 tonnes of battery-quality lithium carbonate annually.
The project benefits from strategic backing that is uncommon among pre-revenue miners. A U.S. Department of Energy loan package provides up to approximately US$2.23 billion of financing, and Lithium Americas received an initial US$435 million draw in October 2025. General Motors committed funding and credit support in exchange for its project interest and product rights.
Construction and financial position
At the end of the first quarter of 2026, Lithium Americas reported US$1.21 billion of cash and restricted cash and approximately US$1.07 billion of long-term liabilities. The company remained pre-revenue. Management estimated Phase 1 capital at approximately US$2.93 billion and expected 2026 project spending of US$1.3 billion to US$1.6 billion, with mechanical completion targeted for late 2027.
Bull case
Thacker Pass could become a strategically important domestic source of lithium for the North American battery industry. Government financing, an experienced engineering contractor and GM’s participation reduce—but do not eliminate—financing and market-access risk. Successful commissioning could transform Lithium Americas from a developer into a large producer.
Bear case
Large construction projects frequently encounter cost inflation, labour shortages, equipment delays and commissioning problems. Thacker Pass uses a sedimentary resource and processing route that must be proven consistently at commercial scale. The company is also exposed to lithium prices, tariffs, U.S. industrial policy and future equity dilution.
The project has faced litigation and opposition concerning land, water, wildlife, cultural resources and Indigenous interests. Existing permits and court decisions do not remove the need for ongoing compliance and community engagement.
Analyst context
TMX displayed an average target near C$8.98 from seven analysts, but targets for a pre-revenue developer depend heavily on assumed lithium prices, discount rates and construction outcomes.
Bottom line
Lithium Americas offers unusually direct exposure to U.S. lithium industrial policy. The strategic rationale is strong, but shareholder returns will depend on construction discipline, process performance and the lithium market at start-up.
