What this measures

Copper futures. Widely read as a gauge of global industrial demand and central to Canada's base-metal miners.

What moves it

  • Chinese construction and grid spending, still the largest single demand block.
  • Electrification demand — grid, EV and data-centre buildout — which is the structural story.
  • Mine supply disruptions, which are frequent and concentrated in Chile and Peru.

The Canadian angle

Copper is the growth commodity of the Canadian mining sector, and a large share of the world's development-stage copper projects are held by TSX and TSXV issuers. Copper strength usually widens the financing window for those juniors.
