Equinox Gold Fell 5% on Its Largest Quarter of Production
The quarter carried only two months of the two mines Equinox bought from Orla, and the company's own guidance leaves the fourth quarter needing more than a repeat of the third.
Equinox Gold Corp. (TSX: EQX) reported 237,019 ounces of gold for the third quarter of 2026 on October 13, its largest quarterly output this year, and the shares closed down 5.2 per cent at C$15.47. The quarter included only August and September for Musselwhite and Camino Rojo, the two mines acquired from Orla Mining. Against reaffirmed 2026 guidance of 870,000 to 920,000 ounces, the fourth quarter has to deliver between 258,517 and 308,517 ounces. US$172.5 million of convertible notes is redeemed on October 20.

Equinox Gold Corp. produced 237,019 ounces of gold in the third quarter, the most it has reported in any quarter this year. Its shares fell on the news.
The company published the figures before the Toronto open on October 13, 2026. By the close the stock was at C$15.47, down C$0.84 or 5.2 per cent, on 2.85 million shares against an average of roughly 3.5 million (market data read after the close on October 13, 2026, 15-minute delayed; secondary market data, not verified against SEDAR+). The release itself offers no explanation for the fall, and it would be odd if it did. What it does offer is a set of numbers that say something more specific than "strong quarter," and the specifics are where the day makes sense.
Two of the three months came with the new mines attached
Equinox completed its combination with Orla Mining on July 31, 2026. When a deal closes partway through a quarter, the acquired mine only shows up in the buyer's figures from the closing date onward. So the third quarter contains August and September for Musselwhite in northwestern Ontario and for Camino Rojo in Mexico, and nothing from July.
The company disclosed both versions of those two numbers, which is useful. Musselwhite contributed 45,616 ounces over the two months it belonged to Equinox, and produced 63,090 ounces across the full three months. Camino Rojo contributed 18,975 ounces, against 26,168 for the full quarter.
The difference is worth working out. Musselwhite's missing month is 17,474 ounces and Camino Rojo's is 7,193, which together come to 24,667 ounces that a complete quarter would have added. Put those back and the portfolio's third-quarter run rate is 261,686 ounces.
That figure matters more than the headline 237,019, because the fourth quarter is the first one in which Equinox owns everything for all three months.
The fourth quarter has to beat the third, not match it
Equinox reaffirmed 2026 production guidance of 870,000 to 920,000 ounces of gold, the range it set on August 5, 2026 after the Orla deal closed. Through nine months it has produced 611,483 ounces.
Subtract one from the other and the fourth quarter has to deliver between 258,517 and 308,517 ounces.
Set that against the 261,686-ounce run rate calculated above. A quarter that simply repeats the third, with the two acquired mines contributing for three months instead of two, clears the bottom of the range by about 3,000 ounces and falls roughly 47,000 ounces short of the top. Guidance is met at the low end by doing nothing new, and met anywhere above that only by producing more.
The company's language points the same way without putting a number on it: both Valentine, in Newfoundland, and Greenstone, in Ontario, are described as positioned for stronger production through the rest of 2026 and into 2027.
There is a second figure circulating that needs separating from this one. Equinox says the combined business produces about 1.1 million ounces when Orla's full twelve months are counted. That is a description of the portfolio's annual scale, not a forecast of what the company will report for 2026. The number Equinox will publish for this calendar year is the 870,000 to 920,000 range, because five months of Orla is all that belongs to it.
Greenstone is the question this release does not answer
Greenstone produced 60,596 ounces in the third quarter and 185,589 ounces over nine months. It processed 2,178,706 tonnes at 1.03 grams of gold per tonne, a measure of how much gold sits in each tonne of rock fed through the mill. Grade and tonnage multiply together to make ounces, so a mine can hold its output by running more rock at a lower grade, or less rock at a higher one.
What the release does not contain is any mine-by-mine comparison against a target. It reports what Greenstone produced and says the mine is positioned to produce more. It does not say whether the quarter landed where the company expected it to land.
That absence is the reason two confident and opposite claims were both circulating by mid-morning. Some of the retail discussion read Greenstone as weak; some read it as in line with expectations. Neither is established by this document, because this document does not make the comparison either way. Equinox files its third-quarter financial statements on November 9, 2026, with a conference call the following day, and the mine-level costs that would settle the argument arrive with them.
US$172.5 million of notes leaves the balance sheet on October 20
The other number in the release that the share price could reasonably be responding to is a debt instrument.
A convertible note is a loan the holder may swap for shares instead of cash, at a price fixed when the note was issued. If the share price sits well above that fixed price, the holder takes the shares, because they are worth more than the money.
Equinox called all US$172.5 million of its 4.75 per cent convertible senior notes due October 15, 2028 on September 21, 2026, setting the redemption for October 20, 2026. The conversion rate was 158.7302 common shares per US$1,000 of principal, raised to 165.0732 shares for holders who convert during the notice period, which the company put at a conversion price of about US$6.0579. Full conversion would issue up to 28,475,124 common shares, which Equinox calculated at about 2.44 per cent of its shares outstanding.
Equinox shares closed at C$15.47 in Toronto on October 13. The conversion price is far below that, in either currency. Neither the September notice nor the October release states whether conversions settle in cash, in shares or in a mix, but the company's own accounting treats the outcome as settled: it reported net cash of US$163 million and said the figure excludes the in-the-money 2023 convertible notes set for redemption.
This desk reported the call on September 24, 2026 and described the notice as priced to end in shares. Nothing in the October figures contradicts that, and the exclusion from net cash is consistent with it.
The rest of the balance sheet, as the company reported it: US$527 million of cash at September 30, 2026, total liquidity of US$1.2 billion including US$635 million of undrawn revolving credit, US$190 million of debt repaid during the quarter, US$365 million still drawn on the revolver, and approximately US$1.2 billion of debt repaid so far this year. These are the production release's figures. The third-quarter financial statements are not filed until November 9, so none of them has an interim statement behind it yet.
The valuation figures being passed around are not in any filing
Two numbers did most of the work in the retail conversation about this release, and neither comes from Equinox.
The first is a pair of broker consensus earnings multiples for 2027 and 2028. The second is a net asset value range quoted in US dollars. Neither appears in any company document, both are third-party estimates, and the consensus multiples depend on whatever gold price each contributing analyst assumed, which is not published alongside the figure. They are not verified here and they are not used here. The Maple Markets publishes no estimate of its own.
One number in that conversation does come from the company, and it is smaller than people seemed to think. Equinox repurchased 759,000 shares for about US$9.0 million during the quarter, and 1,697,600 shares for about US$20.7 million from the start of the year to October 9, 2026. On roughly 1.17 billion shares outstanding, the year's buyback is about 0.15 per cent of the count. The notes being redeemed next week can issue up to 28,475,124 shares. The buyback is the smaller of the two by a factor of about seventeen.
The mines did what they were supposed to do
My own read is that the operating quarter is the least ambiguous part of the release. Three Canadian mines ran, two newly acquired mines were folded in mid-quarter and disclosed twice over so the arithmetic could be checked, and US$190 million of debt went out the door. Equinox also received its Record of Decision and final federal permits for South Railroad in Nevada, with first gold planned for 2028. That is a quarter in which the company did the things it said it would do.
The share count is the part that changed, or is about to. A producer that has spent the year reducing debt is about to settle a note whose economics point to shares rather than cash, and the ceiling on that issuance is published. Those two facts sit in the same release and pull in opposite directions, and a 5.2 per cent fall on a day with no new guidance and no cost disclosure is not a mystery once both are on the page.
Two numbers moved this quarter, and only one was ounces.

Mining and ResourcesWhy Equinox Left Mexico and Nicaragua Out of Its Drill UpdateEquinox Gold's 29 September 2026 exploration update reported drill results from Musselwhite, Valentine and Greenstone, all in Canada, and disclosed that 45 rigs are turning across nine projects in four countries. Fifteen of those rigs are in Mexico and 12 in Nicaragua. No results from either country appear in the release, and no explanation for the omission does either.Priya Sandhu · September 30, 2026 · 6 min
macroKinross Raised Its Cost Per Ounce Eight Per Cent, and the Arithmetic Points at the DenominatorKinross Gold cut its 2026 production outlook and raised its all-in sustaining cost outlook in one release on September 23, 2026. The cost figure went from about US$1,730 per ounce to US$1,850 to US$1,900 per ounce. Holding February's implied total cost dollars constant and dividing by the new ounce count gives US$1,870 per ounce, inside the new band. That is what a per-ounce cost measure does when the ounces go missing, and it is the single most useful thing to understand about a gold producer's headline cost number.Marc Belzile · September 26, 2026 · 8 min
