Earnings reports are marketing documents too

Management wants to highlight the good news and bury the bad. Investors need to read the full report, including the notes, not just the headline earnings per share number. Here is a practical order of attack.

Start with the context

Before you open the numbers, read the management discussion and the conference call transcript. Look for:

  • Guidance changes, both up and down.
  • Mention of macro factors like interest rates, currency, or commodity prices.
  • One-time items that distort the headline number.

Read the income statement last

Start with the cash flow statement instead. It shows whether the company actually generated cash or whether profits were bookkeeping. Then move to the balance sheet. Ask:

  • Did receivables grow faster than revenue?
  • Did inventory pile up?
  • Did debt increase while cash stayed flat?

Only then look at the income statement. The headline EPS number is the easiest to manipulate through accounting choices.

Find the real growth rate

Look at revenue growth excluding acquisitions. If the company is growing by buying other businesses, organic revenue is the metric that matters. For software and subscription businesses, also look at recurring revenue retention.

Understand the segment split

Many Canadian companies operate multiple businesses. A miner may have copper and gold. A software company may have subscription and services revenue. Segment margins reveal where the business is truly strong and where it is struggling.

Watch the non-GAAP reconciliations

Adjusted EBITDA and adjusted EPS are useful, but they are also management-defined. Read the reconciliation to see what is being excluded. Stock compensation, restructuring, and acquisition costs are common add-backs. Some are legitimate; others are recurring costs dressed up as one-time.

Canadian specifics

  • Currency: Many TSX-listed companies report in USD or have large USD revenue. Note the FX assumptions.
  • Tax rates: Canadian federal and provincial tax rates can change quarterly expectations.
  • Statutory filings: SEDAR+ is the official Canadian document repository. Always verify numbers there if something looks odd.

Key takeaway

A good earnings report read takes time. The headline is the least important part. Cash, balance sheet quality, and organic growth are the signals that separate good companies from good stories.
