Canada has a tech sector, not just Shopify

Most investors associate Canadian technology with Shopify. That is fair: Shopify is the country''s largest tech company by market cap. But the Canadian technology sector also includes Constellation Software, Descartes Systems, Kinaxis, OpenText, Lightspeed, and a growing number of smaller SaaS and vertical software companies.

The business models differ

  • E-commerce platforms: Shopify is the global leader. Its revenue is tied to merchant volume, subscriptions, and payments take rate.
  • Vertical software acquirers: Constellation Software buys small, niche software businesses and runs them forever. It is a capital allocation story as much as a technology story.
  • Logistics software: Descartes Systems provides supply chain and logistics software. It is less glamorous but highly recurring.
  • SaaS platforms: Kinaxis, Lightspeed, and others sell recurring subscription software. The key metrics are recurring revenue growth, net revenue retention, and path to profitability.

What long-term investors should watch

  • Recurring revenue: A high percentage of recurring revenue reduces volatility and increases predictability.
  • Net revenue retention: If existing customers spend more over time, the business is growing without adding new customers.
  • Rule of 40: Combined revenue growth rate plus free cash flow margin. Above 40% is the benchmark for healthy SaaS.
  • Path to profitability: Growth at all costs is out of favour. Investors now want to see a clear path to free cash flow.

Canadian tech specifics

  • U.S. dollar exposure: Many Canadian tech companies earn most of their revenue in USD. A weak loonie helps reported results; a strong loonie hurts.
  • Talent costs: Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal compete with U.S. tech hubs for engineering talent. Wage inflation can pressure margins.
  • Acquisitions: Canadian tech companies are often acquired by larger U.S. firms. That can be a quick win for shareholders but reduces the number of independent Canadian tech leaders.

How to build exposure

For most investors, a mix of individual names and a Canadian tech ETF is the cleanest approach. Individual picks allow you to focus on the business models you understand. An ETF provides diversification across companies at different stages.

Key takeaway

Canadian technology is more diversified than the headline suggests. Long-term investors should focus on recurring revenue, retention, and the path to free cash flow rather than chasing the next growth story.
