Lundin Gold Extended a Gold Trend to Eight Kilometres, and None of It Is a Resource Yet
The September 24, 2026 release reported six intercepts from two targets near Fruta del Norte in Ecuador, and the most quoted of them draws almost all its grade from a single 60-centimetre sample.
Lundin Gold Inc. (TSX: LUG; Nasdaq Stockholm: LUG; FSE: F1YN) reported 204.26 g/t gold over 3.05 metres at Bonza Sur on September 24, 2026, and said a new discovery at Quebrada Dorada extends the epithermal gold trend beyond eight kilometres. Of the metal in the headline intercept, 99.7 per cent comes from 0.60 metres assaying 1,035.60 g/t. Five other intercepts are more evenly distributed and are the stronger evidence. The release carries no mineral resource or reserve estimate for either target, and states the intercepts are core lengths, not true widths.

Lundin Gold Inc. reported on September 24, 2026 that drilling near its Fruta del Norte mine in southeastern Ecuador had extended a known gold-bearing trend to more than eight kilometres. The release also carried a grade that will be quoted far more often than the trend: 204.26 grams of gold per tonne over 3.05 metres at the Bonza Sur target.
The trend is the more consequential of the two, and the grade is the one that needs arithmetic.
Three different kinds of asset arrived in one release
The release covers three things that sit at different stages, and the company keeps them separate. Fruta del Norte is a mine in production. Bonza Sur is an exploration target where holes are being drilled into mineralisation already known to be there. Quebrada Dorada is described as a discovery, meaning drilling has found gold where the company had not previously confirmed it.
None of the three is advanced by this release into a mineral resource. A mineral resource is an estimate, prepared to Canadian National Instrument 43-101 standards, of how much metal is in the ground and at what confidence; it requires enough drill spacing to interpolate grade between holes. A reserve goes further and requires a study showing the metal can be mined at a profit. The September 24 release states no resource and no reserve for either Bonza Sur or Quebrada Dorada.
That is the ordinary condition of early drilling around a producing mine, and it is the fact most likely to be lost when a three-digit grade is in the headline.
The headline grade sits almost entirely in sixty centimetres of core
Hole BLP-2026-553 returned 204.26 g/t gold over 3.05 metres from 140.25 metres, including 1,035.60 g/t gold over 0.60 metres, per the release.
Multiply grade by length and the composition of that average becomes visible. Grade times metres gives gram-metres, a measure of how much gold an interval holds across its length, and it shows whether an interval is mineralised throughout or carried by one sample.
The full intercept is 622.99 gram-metres. The 0.60-metre sample at 1,035.60 g/t is 621.36 of them, or 99.7 per cent. The remaining 2.45 metres hold 1.63 gram-metres between them, an average of about 0.67 g/t.
So the 3.05-metre intercept is, in substance, one extraordinary 60-centimetre sample with low-grade rock either side of it. Grades above a thousand grams per tonne almost always mean coarse visible gold, and coarse gold in a narrow vein is real metal that says very little about the rock around it. The release does not state whether the reported grades are capped, and a resource model would apply its own cap before using a sample like this one.
The other five intercepts are the better evidence
The release reported five further intercepts, and they carry their grade over more of their length.
| Target | Hole | Intercept | Gram-metres |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bonza Sur | BLP-2026-483-D1 | 28.05 g/t Au over 4.20 m from 698.30 m | 117.8 |
| Bonza Sur | BLP-2026-483-D2 | 13.75 g/t Au over 5.50 m from 715.35 m | 75.6 |
| Bonza Sur | BLP-2026-475-D5 | 25.24 g/t Au over 2.90 m from 962.45 m | 73.2 |
| Quebrada Dorada | CHT-2026-495 | 6.53 g/t Au over 13.05 m from 194.70 m | 85.2 |
| Quebrada Dorada | ALE-2026-529 | 20.15 g/t Au over 3.15 m from 361.70 m | 63.5 |
Maple Markets arithmetic on the grades and lengths reported in the release of September 24, 2026.
None of those five depends on a single sample the way the headline does. Three of them come from below 690 metres, which matters because mineralisation that persists to depth is what allows a deposit to be mined for years rather than months. The 13.05 metres at 6.53 g/t in the first Quebrada Dorada hole is the most useful number in the release: a grade several times mill feed over a width a mining method can work with, at a target the company had not previously drilled out.
Andre Oliveira, P.Geo., vice-president of exploration, is named as the qualified person on the release. Jamie Beck, president and chief executive officer, is quoted in it.
Eight kilometres is a map line, not a tonnage
The trend statement is the part that governs the exploration budget. The company said Quebrada Dorada extends the known gold mineralised trend to more than eight kilometres.
A trend of that kind is a line drawn through points where mineralisation of a similar style has been found. Epithermal deposits, the type at Fruta del Norte, form where hot mineralised fluids rise along faults near surface, so they tend to occur in clusters strung along a structure rather than as one isolated body. Establishing that the structure runs for eight kilometres tells the company where to put the next holes. It does not say how much of that eight kilometres holds economic gold, and on the present disclosure the answer is unknown for almost all of it.
The company has committed rigs rather than words: three drilling at Bonza Sur and two at Quebrada Dorada, per the release. Five rigs on two targets beside an operating mill is a serious programme, and it is also how long this will take to resolve. Step-out drilling on an eight-kilometre trend is measured in years.
Core length is not width, and the company says so
Every interval above is a length measured down the drill hole. The release presents the results as drill core lengths and states they are not true widths.
A hole that cuts a steeply dipping vein at an angle records more metres than the vein is thick, and the difference can be large. Until the orientation of each mineralised structure is established, the widths above are the maximum the geometry allows rather than the thickness a mine would encounter. The figure that will eventually matter for Bonza Sur is grade across true width, and it is not in this release.
A twenty-two billion dollar producer moved half a per cent
Lundin Gold closed at C$91.51 on September 25, 2026, up 0.52 per cent, on 0.33 times its 30-day average volume, per market data read after the close and delayed fifteen minutes. On 241,832,730 shares outstanding as at May 29, 2026, per the company's investor disclosure, that is a market value of about C$22.1 billion.
The muted response is the correct scale of reaction. Exploration intercepts a kilometre from an operating mill change the value of a C$22 billion company only when they turn into ounces that can be scheduled into the mill, and that conversion needs infill drilling, a resource estimate and a mine plan. The shares are the same security on three exchanges: LUG on the Toronto Stock Exchange, LUG on Nasdaq Stockholm, and F1YN in Frankfurt under WKN A12GZU and ISIN CA5503711080, per the Frankfurt exchange's listing record read on September 25, 2026.
SEDAR+ was not readable when this was written, so the share count above is the company's own investor-disclosure figure as at May 29, 2026 and is not checked against filings made since.
The distance between a vein and a mill schedule
What Lundin Gold has added is a second drill target with grade over workable widths, a structure that runs further than the company previously confirmed, and one spectacular sample that will be repeated everywhere and proves the least.
Five rigs are turning on it. The next release that carries a resource estimate for Bonza Sur, rather than another intercept, will be the one that tells anyone what the eight kilometres is worth.
