Why identifiers matter

Canadian stocks trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange and TSX Venture Exchange. A German investor usually cannot type "SHOP.TO" into a German brokerage and expect a clean fill. You need the international identifiers: ISIN and WKN.

ISIN explained

The International Securities Identification Number is a 12-character code that uniquely identifies a security globally. It always starts with a two-letter country code. Canadian ISINs start with CA. For example, a Canadian common share might have an ISIN like CA1234567890.

The ISIN is the same everywhere in the world. If you know the ISIN, you can find the security in any brokerage that offers access to the Canadian market.

WKN explained

The Wertpapierkennnummer is a German-specific identifier. It is usually six characters long and contains letters and numbers. German brokers often require the WKN to place an order. If your broker does not automatically map the ISIN to a WKN, you may need to look it up in the broker''s security database or ask support.

How to find a Canadian ISIN

  • Check the company''s investor relations page.
  • Use SEDAR+ for Canadian filings.
  • Search the TSX listed company directory.
  • Use your broker''s security lookup by company name.

Ticker conventions

  • TSX main board: Usually a two-to-five-letter ticker followed by .TO in global data feeds.
  • TSX Venture: Often followed by .V in some data feeds.
  • U.S. cross-listed Canadian companies: May trade on the NYSE or Nasdaq with a plain ticker and no exchange suffix.

Order placement tips

When placing an order in a German brokerage:

  • Use the ISIN if the broker accepts it.
  • Use the WKN if the broker is German-only.
  • Specify the exchange as Toronto if the security is dual-listed.
  • Watch the currency. Canadian shares trade in CAD unless you are buying a U.S.-listed ADR.

Tax and reporting

Canadian dividends may be subject to withholding tax. Germany and Canada have a tax treaty that may reduce the rate. Keep your dividend statements for your German tax return. Capital gains treatment depends on your personal tax situation and whether the securities are held in a German brokerage or an international account.

Key takeaway

Identifiers remove confusion. A Canadian stock is not a black box once you have the ISIN. German investors should keep a small reference sheet of ISINs, WKNs, and exchanges for every Canadian position they own.
