Spot Bitcoin ETFs on the TSX: Fees, Custody and Tracking Dissected
Canada listed these first. The structural details still get glossed over.
Canada listed the world's first spot bitcoin ETFs. Five years on, the products are mature and the differences between them are structural rather than cosmetic — custody, currency hedging and fee drag all compound.

Canada approved spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds well before the United States, and the resulting products have a long operating record. That record is useful, because it allows the structural questions to be answered with data rather than theory.
What the fund actually holds
A spot bitcoin ETF holds bitcoin directly, in custody, on behalf of unitholders. This distinguishes it from futures-based products, which hold exchange-traded contracts and incur roll costs when the futures curve is in contango. Roll drag in futures products has historically been a significant and persistent source of underperformance against spot. Spot funds do not have it.
What spot funds do have:
- Management fee, charged daily against net asset value.
- Custody fee, sometimes included in the management fee and sometimes disclosed separately in the fund's operating expenses.
- Trading and rebalancing costs on creation and redemption.
- Currency effects, if the fund is CAD-denominated but the asset prices in USD.
The total cost of ownership is the management expense ratio plus the trading expense ratio, both disclosed in the fund's management report of fund performance. The MER alone understates it.
Custody is the risk nobody prices
Bitcoin custody is a genuinely different problem from equity custody. The relevant questions, all answerable from the prospectus and continuous disclosure:
- Who is the custodian, and are they a regulated trust company or a crypto-native firm?
- Cold storage percentage. What share of holdings is held offline, and what is the operational process for moving assets?
- Insurance. What is covered, by whom, and to what limit? Crypto custody insurance frequently covers theft from cold storage but excludes losses arising from the custodian's own insolvency or from certain insider events. The exclusions are the substance.
- Segregation. Are fund assets held in segregated wallets, or commingled and tracked by ledger entry?
- Proof of holdings. Does the fund publish wallet addresses or a third-party attestation of holdings?
None of this affects performance in normal conditions. All of it determines the outcome in the one condition that matters.
Currency hedging: a real and underestimated decision
Bitcoin prices in US dollars. A Canadian investor buying a CAD-denominated unhedged fund holds two exposures: bitcoin and USD/CAD. A hedged version strips the currency exposure at a cost — the hedge itself has a carry cost tied to the interest rate differential between Canada and the United States, plus rebalancing costs from hedging a highly volatile underlying.
Hedging a volatile asset is expensive because the hedge notional must be reset constantly as the asset value moves. In practice, hedged bitcoin funds have tended to lag unhedged versions over multi-year periods when currency moves were modest, and to outperform sharply in periods of CAD strength. The choice is a currency view, and it should be made deliberately rather than by defaulting to whichever ticker appeared first in the search results.
Tracking error, decomposed
Expected annual underperformance versus spot bitcoin ≈ MER + trading expense ratio + hedging drag (if hedged) + cash drag.
Illustrative worked example. A fund with a 1.00% MER, 0.15% trading expense ratio and no hedge should track roughly 1.15% behind spot annually. A hedged share class of the same fund with 0.60% of hedging cost would track roughly 1.75% behind. Over five years, compounded, that is a difference of approximately 3% of terminal value between two share classes of the same fund holding the same bitcoin.
Compare funds on realised tracking difference over one and three years — disclosed in the management report of fund performance — not on MER alone.
Registered account treatment
The practical advantage of the Canadian-listed product for Canadian investors is eligibility in registered accounts. A qualifying ETF listed on a designated stock exchange can generally be held in an RRSP, TFSA or RESP, which direct holdings of bitcoin cannot. For an asset with no yield and potentially large capital appreciation, TFSA treatment is the meaningful benefit — gains are not taxed on withdrawal.
This is a tax-structure question specific to individual circumstances, and it is one where the cost of professional advice is easily justified relative to the amounts at stake.
A short due-diligence list
- Spot or futures — confirm from the prospectus, not the marketing name.
- MER plus trading expense ratio, and three-year realised tracking difference.
- Custodian identity, cold storage share, and the specific insurance exclusions.
- Hedged versus unhedged, chosen deliberately.
- Average daily trading volume and typical bid-ask spread, which is a real cost for anyone who does not hold indefinitely.
- Whether the fund lends its holdings to generate yield, and if so, the counterparty and collateral terms.
