Lundin Mining combines established copper production with one of the industry’s more ambitious development opportunities. Its operating mines—Candelaria and Caserones in Chile and Chapada in Brazil—provide current revenue and cash flow. Its 50%-owned Vicuña partnership with BHP provides long-term exposure to the Josemaria and Filo del Sol copper-gold-silver deposits.
In February 2026, Lundin and BHP published an integrated Vicuña technical study outlining a staged development. The first stage contemplates a sulphide concentrator initially supplied by Josemaria, while a later stage would develop Filo del Sol’s leachable material through solvent-extraction and electrowinning facilities. The study described a large, long-life district, but its scale also implies a complex and capital-intensive build.
Current financial base
Lundin reported first-quarter 2026 revenue of approximately US$1.16 billion and adjusted EBITDA of US$626.7 million. It ended the period with US$565 million in cash, approximately US$302 million of debt and about US$249 million of net cash. The balance sheet was further supported by an expanded credit facility.
Bull case
Higher copper prices, stable production at Candelaria, Caserones and Chapada, and successful advancement of Vicuña could significantly increase the company’s scale. Argentine approval of Vicuña’s application under the RIGI investment framework may improve fiscal and regulatory visibility, although it does not remove development risk.
Bear case
Vicuña could require very large capital commitments before producing cash flow. Development crosses high-altitude areas in Argentina and Chile, creating water, biodiversity, infrastructure, permitting and community-engagement challenges. Existing mines also face grade variability, weather, labour and maintenance risk. Lundin’s share price will remain sensitive to copper prices and expectations embedded in long-term project studies.
Analyst and peer context
TMX displayed an average 12-month target near C$42.46 from 14 analysts, indicating broad institutional coverage but not certainty about project value.
Bottom line
Lundin offers investors a combination of operating copper exposure and a major development option. The opportunity is meaningful, but future returns will depend heavily on project design, partner decisions, capital discipline and permitting execution.
